Master Carillon
Overview
The Last Bell-Ringer - Sole keeper of the Sacred Frequency that harmonizes the City of Bells' seven bell towers. Last living member of the ancient Bell-Ringer's Guild, his knowledge represents the only hope of restoring defenses after Overlord/Generals/The Ash Dancer's assault.
Current Status
Location: Traveling with the Fellowship after rescue from The Master Bell Tower
Mission: Originally bound for northern outpost, complicated by tribal politics
Critical Knowledge: Sacred Frequency and the Unwritten Song
Recent Developments
Teaching Role: Demanding but caring instructor providing intensive bell-making training to Mortimer
Project Limitations: Unwritten Song remains incomplete; loss of original Seven Great Bells requires new approaches
Bell Reconstruction: Essential expertise for working with Ale-ore's documents and Kurg's tuning forks to develop new defenses
Mysterious Clues: References to "the dust" in his hiding place, possibly connecting to The Dust Bowl
Session 3 Research Breakthrough
Song of Beginnings Discovery: During the journey from Kovat toward Hearthgate, Carillon became increasingly excited about connections between his research and the Song of Beginnings.
Document Analysis: Has been studying documents from Khaz-Dorahn that reference ancient civilizations' beliefs about sound-based creation - that the world was created "with a tune, with a certain sound."
Dust Bowl Connection: Carillon's research led him to believe The Dust Bowl - the mountain that disappeared overnight - was the site where dwarves and elves worked together on sound, music, and instruments.
Collaboration Site Theory: The destroyed mountain was a collaboration site for creating the Song of Beginnings, explaining why The Entropy Shepherd specifically targeted it for annihilation.
Nerding Out: Carillon's enthusiasm for discovering these connections suggests the Song of Beginnings may be compatible with or related to his incomplete Unwritten Song.
Session 4 Developments
Discovery of the Sound Garden: Using his tuning fork during exploration, Carillon discovered the acoustically perfect properties of the hollow valley that would become the Fellowship's first forward base. His immediate assessment: "Well fuck me this is a beautifully acoustically sound space. This would make an amazing auditorium." Identified the natural acoustic isolation ("sound bubble"), warm microclimate, and therapeutic effects on void corruption victims.
Boom-Stick Acoustic Calibration: Served as essential technical expert for the acoustic anti-void weapon project. Determined the precise tuning fork specifications including correct metal composition, exact thickness, and proper striking force needed to produce the "perfect harmony" frequency effective against void titan corruption. Worked directly with Mortimer on fine-tuning calibration.
Proof of Acoustic Combat Theory: The Boom-Stick's success—producing a "quite pretty" bassy tone with "audible cleanse" effect that disrupted void corruption—validated Carillon's theories that specific frequencies can counter entropic forces. Demonstrated that acoustic weapons require expertise and precision, not merely construction skill.
Acoustic Research Base: Established ongoing research operations at the Sound Garden, conducting tuning fork experiments and studying the valley's unique properties. His presence at the Fellowship's first base suggests long-term acoustic research program combining his bell-ringing knowledge with new anti-entropy weapon development.
Technical Collaboration: Proved ability to work effectively with diverse craftspeople—combining his acoustic expertise with Ale-ore's dwarven engineering and Kurg's orc rapid prototyping. Shows willingness to adapt traditional bell-ringing knowledge to new defensive applications.
Special Knowledge
The Sacred Frequency
Exact harmonic resonance allowing seven bells to work in concert:
- Cannot be written down (shifts with atmospheric conditions)
- Must be felt and heard simultaneously
- Requires technical precision and intuitive musical sense
- Passed down through generations, now nearly extinct
The Bell-Ringer's Unwritten Song
Incomplete melody existing in gaps between conscious thought:
- Composition: Being created unconsciously, note by note between bell tolls
- Nature: Exists through forgetting/remembering cycles
- Vulnerability: Threatened by Shepherd's "Mnemonic Dissolution"
- Potential: May enable new harmonics beyond seven-tower system
Character Details
Appearance
- Elderly but spry, hands stained with bell-metal polish
- Ears damaged from proximity to massive bells
- Moves with precise timing rhythm
- Wears faded blue Bell-Ringer's Guild robes
Personality
- Dedicated to duty above personal safety
- Protective of guild secrets but recognizes dire circumstances
- Shows isolation of being last of his kind
- Passionate about harmonic frequencies
Mannerisms
- Speaks in measured cadences mirroring bell rhythms
- Hums Unwritten Song fragments when stressed
- Touches surfaces checking for harmonic resonance
- Counts time obsessively
Campaign Significance
Strategic Value: Living repository of techniques that could defend other locations against entropy-based attacks. His knowledge preserves hope for future resistance efforts.
Game Mechanics
Sacred Knowledge: Cannot be written down - must be experienced. Can share fragments through conversation, but complete teaching requires safety and time.
Keeper of Harmonics: Can identify source/nature of sound-based magic or attacks
Crystallization Vulnerability: Especially susceptible to Threats/The Stillness Choir's attacks - damage spreads and affects memories
